Title: New Years

All text used with permission, copyright by Noam Chomsky.  The text is from a speech by Noam Chomsky entitled “The New War on Terrorism: Fact and Fiction,” which was released in 2002 by the record label Alternative Tentacle.   I chose specific texts from nine of the tracks on the CD and arranged the text, generally not in the order of its initial presentation in terms of the tracks themselves or the text within each track.  The piece attempts to serve as a Meta-text for the speech, not a reproduction of its main arguments in any systematic, understandable way; rather, it invokes concepts and ideas from the original text.  Below is the title of each section and the text that it clearly presented.

  1. Tools I

Terrorism works
That’s world history
And since the strong also control the doctrinal system
And their terror doesn’t count as terror.

And their terror doesn’t count as terror
And since the strong also control also control the doctrinal system
That’s world history
Terrorism works.

  1. Historical Events I

It was a historical event.

That’s how they conquered the world,
not by handing out candy to babies.

The Congo didn’t attack Belgium,
Indian didn’t attack England,
Algeria didn’t attack France. (X3)

It was a historical event.

The Congo didn’t attack Belgium,
Indian didn’t attack England,
Algeria didn’t attack France. (X2)

That’s how they conquered the world,
not by handing out candy to babies.

The Congo didn’t attack Belgium,
Indian didn’t attack England,
Algeria didn’t attack France.

It was a historic event.

The first time the guns have been pointed the other way.

  1. Just Words I

Remember crusade…
At first it was going to be a crusade.
            There’s an ambiguity there.
            Remember a crusade…
At first it was going to be a crusade.
            Crusade.

And then it was going to be Infinite Justice.
            (remember) Justice…
            Infinite Justice…
            Remember, and then it was…

To endure…

Crusade…
At first it was going to be a crusade.

And then it was going to be infinite justice.
Remember justice…
And then it was going to be infinite justice.

And then it was changed to Enduring Freedom.
Enduring Freedom.
There’s an ambiguity there,
To endure means to suffer, you know, and a…

  1. Just Words II

Fear.

Terror is the calculated use of violence, or the threat of violence, to obtain political or ideological goals through intimidation, coercion, or instilling fear. (X2)

Why should the United States and Israel vote against a major resolution condemning terror in the strongest terms?

Fear.

Terror is the calculated use of violence, or the threat of violence, to obtain political or ideological goals through intimidation, coercion, or instilling fear.

Fear.

Nothing in this resolution infringes on the rights of people struggling against colonial regimes or foreign military occupation to continue their resistance of others, other states, states outside, in their just cause.

Fear.

(To endure means to suffer)
And a…
Why should the United States and Israel vote against a major resolution condemning terror in the strongest terms?

  1. Assumed Conditions

That is that the events of September 11th…

That is that the events of September 11th were a horrendous atrocity.

I’m assuming that our goal is reducing the likelihood of such crimes,
whether against us or against someone else.

I’m assuming that our goal is reducing the likelihood of such crimes,
whether against us or against someone else.

  1. Historical Events II

When the IRA set off bombs in London,
which was pretty serious business.

Like if somebody robs my house,
and I think the guy who did it is probably in a neighborhood across the street…

When the IRA set off bombs in London…
One possible response would have been to destroy Boston…

Like if somebody robs my house,
and I think the guy who did it is probably in a neighborhood across the street…
I don’t go out with an assault rifle and kill everyone it that neighborhood.

  1. Tools II

There prime enemy is what they call the corrupt and oppressive, authoritarian regimes of the Arab World. (X3)

Also they want to defend Muslims elsewhere.
They hate the Russians.

There prime enemy is what they call the corrupt and oppressive, authoritarian regimes of the Arab World. (X2)

From their point of view even Saudi Arabia, the most extreme fundamentalist State in the world I suppose. (X3)
Even that not Islamist enough for them, they need more than that. (X2)

Why did they turn against the United States?
Well, that had to do with what they called the US invasion of Saudi Arabia.

IIX.  Tools III (music not written, word order likely to change)

Fear.

I won’t run…
Which carried out massive…

Fear.

Record…
Spread by the depraved opponents of civilization itself…
Massive atrocities.

I won’t run through…
All over the world

Fear.

The Regan administration responded to this plague
spread by the depraved opponents of civilization itself,
by creating an extraordinary international terrorist network,
totally unprecedented in scale,
which carried out massive atrocities
all over the world.
Fear.

I won’t run through the record.
You’re all educated people,
so I am sure that you learned about it in high school.

IX. Historical Event III (music not written, word order likely to change)

     Beyond.

     Stop.
     Beyond.
     Participating.
     Beyond.
     It.

     Beyond.

Rethink the policies that are creating a reservoir of support.
     Stop.
     It.

     Beyond.

     Rethink.
We should rethink the kinds of policies in which we organize and train terrorist
armies.
It.
Stop.

Rethink.
Beyond.

Stop participating in it. (repeats and fades with other text behind it)
