2022 SEAMUS National Conference - Call for Works and Proposals
The Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) 2022 National Conference will be held at Western Michigan University and virtually from March 30th through April 2nd, 2022. SEAMUS 2022 will showcase a broad spectrum of electro-acoustic modes and practices. We will present a selection of concert works, installations, paper presentations, demonstrations, and workshops. Western Michigan University, the College of Fine Arts, and the School of Music are thrilled to host the SEAMUS Conference and we look forward to welcoming you into our community in-person or virtually!

All presenters who are needed for a successful performance of their work are required to travel to Kalamazoo for the conference. Due to the travel and gathering risks due to the likely persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic, all other presenters are encouraged to enjoy the conference virtually via DeckX, where all concerts and presentations will be streamed and available for review for one month following the conference end date. We will have social events for virtual attendees in the evening via Kumospace and discussion areas in a Discord server for community engagement.
Registration for the conference is required for all presenters and any non-presenter desiring access to the streamed virtual events.
SUBMISSIONS
SEAMUS members may make one submission in each of the following three categories: 1) creative works, 2) presentations/workshops, and 3) creative works for conference-provided performers.
Creative Works
Creative work formats consist of concert works and installations. Concert works include fixed media electroacoustic works, compositions for real-time interactive performance with or without additional performer(s) provided by the submitter, and works combining sound and image/video. Works may be submitted for up to 8 channels – either double diamond or stereo pair configuration.
Selected works will be presented in one of two multi-channel halls or in a limited seating multi-channel studio that will repeat the concerts multiple times for smaller audiences.
Installations will be presented in one of two spaces hosted in the WMU Frostic School of Art.
Presentations/Workshops
Individuals or groups may propose a presentation on a topic related to electroacoustic music composition, performance, pedagogy, etc. Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions.
Individuals or groups may propose a workshop related to the field of electroacoustic composition and/or performance. Workshops are limited to 50 minutes in length.
Creative works for conference-provided performers
Western Michigan University Music faculty will consider works for the Coalescence Percussion Duo, trumpet solo (Robert White), horn solo (Lin Foulk), violin solo (Mary Kothman), choir, saxophone solo (Henning Schröder), and piano solo (Yu-Lien Thé).
Guest artist Shanna Pranaitis (Memoria Nova and Collect/Project) will consider works for solo flute and electronics for a concert on the opening night of the conference.
Members of the Chicago-based Ensemble Dal Niente will also perform at the conference. Pieces may be submitted for 1-5 performers for any combination of the following instruments combined with electronics (please note that no conductor is available): Harp, Percussion, Piano, Violin, and Cello
SEAMUS adjudication is a peer-reviewed double-blind process. Technical/logistical feasibility will be the only consideration subsequent to the adjudication process. More details are available at https://seamusonline.org/national-conference-adjudication-process/
Notifications will be made in early December 2022. Composers whose work is selected are required to register for and attend the conference.

With regards to COVID-19, we hope to offer a fully in-person conference. However, we are unable to predict the future and will adapt the conference as necessary. We will also offer the opportunity to register for the conference and have your work presented without attending in person should you feel unsafe to travel. This only applies if we are able to present your submission without your presence.
